10 Things You Must Know
Before Joining A Gym

It could save you a lot of hassle, time and money!

So, you finally figured out that you aren’t fit anymore

The 6-pack abs you used to have has become a single bulging pack. And the short walk up the stairs, which used to be easy, now leaves you gasping for breath.

The next smart move, of course, is to join a gym.

Because you know very well that you aren’t disciplined enough to run in the park or do those Insanity or Tae Bo workouts at home.

And you don’t want to join a traditional gym with rows of machines and trainers with indifferent attitude either.

No. You want something more fun and enjoyable.

Like martial arts fitness.

Martial arts fitness has truly taken Malaysia by storm. We started the trend back in 2010 when martial arts wasn’t fashionable and all they had were mostly Taekwondo, Karate, Silat and Judo. And some obscure arts like Shaolin and Ninjitsu. That was then.

Today, we have martial arts gyms sprouting up all over Malaysia. Even in smaller towns.

But beware. Not all of them are the same.

Before you make an investment in gym membership, let us give you some important pointers. We have been in the gym business for 5 years, so we can offer you sound advice before you take the plunge:

1) Does it have qualified instructors?

A gym is only as good as its instructors. Training under someone who doesn’t have the necessary skills won’t help you to achieve your goals.

You can’t have a Karate black belt teaching Muay Thai. Or a Taekwondo instructor teaching BJJ with techniques he learnt from YouTube. The techniques and movements are vastly different. And so are the stances.

Over at Muayfit, we only employ instructors of certain caliber. In fact, compared to the other gyms, we dare say – humbly – that we have the best instructors in Malaysia.

For instance:

  • Muay Thai: Boom (top contender for vacant ISKA title belt), Tomasz (K1 Champion), Visaet (international trainer)
  • Brazilian Jiujitsu: Professor Pedro (3rd degree BJJ black belt & Judo black belt), Cris Haja (BJJ Black Belt)
  • Wrestling: Saeed (6 time Iranian National Champion & Olympian)
  • Mixed Martial Arts: Will Chope (UFC veteran), Peter Davis and Nik Harris (ONE Championship MMA stars), Lito Adiwang (URCC fighter), Richard Corminal (Pro FC fighter)
  • Western Boxing: Louis (Croatian boxer and trainer)
  • Krav Maga: Mike Yap (the only certified Krav Maga instructor in Malaysia)

So it comes as no surprise that even fighters from other gyms drop by to train with us.

2) Does it have a wide variety of classes?

Many gyms specialize in only 1 to 2 classes. This is probably due to space constraint or lack of good instructors. So there is a likelihood that you will be bored out of your wits, and eventually, drop out altogether.

Here at Muayfit, we are aware that variety is the spice of life! That’s why we offer more than 13 different types of classes in our gyms, like:

Muay Thai • Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) • Brazilian Jiujitsu (BJJ) • MadSweat Bootcamp • Boxing • Wrestling • Kickboxing • Krav Maga • Urban Warrior Knife Fighting • MuayKids • BJJ for Kids • Pilates • Yoga

Click here to see the class description and here to see the schedule.

You can join one class or multiple classes. Most of our members attend more than one class. For example, they would do 1-hour of MadSweat Bootcamp, followed by 1-1/2 hours of Muay Thai. And the next day, an hour of Wrestling. It’s up to you.

And the best thing is, you pay only ONE price (as low as RM88/month) for ALL the classes.

3) Does it have adequate equipment?

Not all martial arts gyms are properly equipped. In fact, most of them have little to offer except for a few punching bags, kettlebells and free weights.

At Muayfit, we believe in offering more, to give you more value for your money.

So apart from martial arts equipment like punching bags, boxing ring and MMA cage, we also have a Smith Machine, multi gym, leg press machines, pull up/chin up station, treadmill, cross trainer, dumbbell sets, free weights, kettle bells, battling ropes and Power Plates.

Rest assured, you will never get bored at Muayfit!

4) Is it hygienic?

Hygiene is one of the biggest issues plaguing the gym industry. It isn’t easy to maintain a gym in sparkling clean condition as you have tens of people walking in and out every single day. Tough as it may be, you can’t overlook hygiene.

That’s why we spray our Muayfit gyms with SmartCoat, a special solution that’s designed to kill fungus, virus and bacteria upon contact. As the only martial arts gym in Malaysia that uses SmartCoat, it goes to show that we are serious about hygiene and we want to ensure your safety as you work out.

5) Is it a reputable gym?

With so many gyms sprouting out all over the country, it’s easy to get confused when it comes to selecting a gym to join.

For that, you need to look into its reputation. Is it well-known? Is anyone talking about the gym?

With Muayfit, you know that you’re joining an established brand.

Our main Muayfit Facebook fan page ( has more than 103,000 likes.

If you google “Muayfit”, you will see more than 200 links. You will know that we have been on TV, newspapers, magazines and radio. You will also know that we have been featured in Japanese and French martial arts magazine. Even our gyms have been used for Hong Kong martial arts movies.

And on top of that, we were voted “Top 10 MMA Gym in Asia” by two prominent online media, The Fight Nation and Bloody Elbow.

6) How long has it been established?

This is an often overlooked, but important aspect when choosing a gym. More than 10 gyms have closed down last year and a few more will probably close this year.

While it’s easy to set up a gym, it isn’t easy to maintain and run it. The first 3 years are the critical years. If a gym can survive for at least 3 years, you know that they have the financial strength to carry on the business, even in bad times.

Muayfit has been in the business for 5 years, and we now have 4 branches in KL/Klang Valley: Petaling Jaya, Puchong, Damansara Perdana and Kota Kemuning. There will be 1-2 more Muayfit branches opening up this year.

We know the business and we know what works. With Muayfit, you can feel totally secure having joined a long-established, proven brand.

7) Is it value-for-money?

With GST having been implemented since April 1, we know that you are concerned about your finances. If possible, you don’t want to spend unnecessarily.

But you also know that gym is important to your health. Working out improves your fitness and health. So you spend less time at your doctor and more time living your life.

That’s why we come up with different packages to suit your needs.

Believe it or not, our membership fee starts from as low as RM88/month! That’s comes to RM2.93 per day. And you can join ALL the classes we have, 7 days a week (except for major public holidays).

That’s significantly lower than what other gyms – that offer you less – charge you.

8) Does martial arts fitness work?

If you want to look like the Incredible Hulk, a martial arts gym wouldn’t be suitable.

On the other hand, if your aim is to lose weight and regain fitness while learning some self defense, then Muayfit is perfect for you.

An hour of Muay Thai at Muayfit, for example, can help you burn a whopping 1,500 calories! That’s more than running on a treadmill and doing Body Combat – combined.

We have many members who have lost between 10 – 35 kg in a matter of months. The physical transformation was incredible as their once-flabby body became lean and hard.

Look at Keng Fai before he took up martial arts.

And this is him, after training at Muayfit.

Same goes for Benny, who went from flab to fit. And, he still hasn’t reached his goal yet.

You can have it too – lean body with nice muscles – when you take up martial arts fitness at Muayfit.

9) What kind of environment does it have?

It is very important that you feel comfortable in a gym. After all, you are going to spend the next 1.5 hours there working out. It has to feel right.

Very few people would feel comfortable walking into a gym full of heavily-tattooed, foul mouthed characters. And you would feel disgusted too if a gym allows indoor smoking.

Don’t laugh. There are gyms like that.

At Muayfit, we believe in creating a positive family environment for our members. We want them to feel welcome, like Muayfit is their 2nd home. And we have successfully done that, which explains why many of our original members are still with us until today.

10) Does it have a fight team?

If your aim is to become a professional fighter, the gym will need to have a group of professional trainers and good fighters to train with.

Without them, you simply cannot improve.

Over at Muayfit, we have the best professional trainers and Fighters Training Program in Malaysia. You will train alongside professional fighters like Will Chope (UFC Vet), Peter Davis (ONE Championship), Nik Harris (ONE Championship), Ting (ONE Championship), Lito Adiwang (URCC), Richard Corminal (PRO FC), Hanif Zainal (Legend FC) and more.

We can help to train you for competition in Muay Thai, Mixed Martial Arts, Brazilian Jiujitsu, Wrestling, Grappling and Boxing.

As you can see, Muayfit has pretty much everything that you are looking for in a gym.

And it’s super affordable.

Honestly, you won’t find a better gym in KL/Klang Valley that offers you so much – for so little.
